A Door Closes And a Window Bangs Open

Still riding the disappointment from the cancellation of the Body Reading class, I answered my phone Wednesday afternoon. It was the host of a travel show that is produced locally wanting to know if I’d be interested in partnering with his show to get some “free” advertisement.

In actuality it’s a “no money upfront” deal, but it does get me a lot of exposure for a couple of hours commitment each week.

Having never dealt with television before, I was whipped up into the whirlwind of filming. We actually filmed my spot yesterday and it will air for the first time Monday evening with voiceover from the host of the show. I’ll go on the 21st to do my voiceover and I presume it will run with my voice for the duration of the season.

If you’d like to tune in and you’re in the Decatur, Hartselle or Athens area and you have Charter cable, tune to channel 20 (WYAM 51) Monday night at 7pm. You’re looking for the Alabama Traveler show. If you’re not local, don’t worry, I’ll have a video up here as soon as it is ready.

Scratch That

I got notice this morning that the Body Reading 101 class in Birmingham has been canceled. I’m disappointed as the facility doesn’t know whether it will be offered again. Apparently I was one of eight who signed up and they needed more.

The Anatomy Trains website says 12-14 allows them to break even, but the person I talked with at the facility said they were disappointed that they weren’t turning people away as they did last year when this was offered.

So now I’m trying to figure out what I’m going to do this year for CEUs. The AMTA Alabama convention is going to be local and I think I can spring $30 for the entry fee. Of course, I still want the Body Reading skills… perhaps a home study?

Something New to Learn

Have I mentioned that I love to learn? I think that’s why I love the internet so much. Instant gratification for anything I’m wondering about.

I tend to naturally gravitate towards new learning opportunities and recently I found one.

I’m posting it here in case you’re a bodyworker here looking around. The class is called Body Reading 101 and it’s part of the Anatomy Trains curriculum.

So in about a month I’ll be traveling to Pilates on Highland in Birmingham to learn a bit more about analyzing posture and using that information to work more effectively with my clients.

As usual, I’m excited about learning something new and bringing it to my clientele.

If you end up with me in class, be sure to say hi!

Going Portable!

For everyone who is still wondering what I’ve been so excited about lately, here it is! My portable bars arrived Thursday. It was dark before I arrived home so I drug them inside off the porch and have slowly been unpacking the boxes ever since.

This morning I got up early because I couldn’t sleep from excitement. An hour and a half later, viola!

Usually they would go together much quicker, but it was my first time and there were a few other issues that we’re currently working to correct, nonetheless they’re here and they’re together.

So… if you have a group who needs someone to come speak and comes with an impressively large piece of equipment with which to demonstrate, call me!

Being a Regular Client: The Advantages

As a massage therapist I love to see new clients become regular clients. It’s good for business and I enjoy not only meeting new people, but getting to know them. So, it’s good for me. You knew that.

What you may not know is that it’s also good for you. Aside from the obvious benefits of regular massage, stress reduction, healthier muscle and joint function, and the satisfaction of knowing that you’re taking an active role in caring for your body you also have an ally to turn to when your body does you wrong.

A regular client recently called me in extreme pain from a chronic condition that had flared up. She was seeking an appointment for pain relief after having visited an acupuncturist twice while on vacation the previous week and her doctor that day (who told her she couldn’t help until she got the muscles to loosen up and to get a massage).

I was fully booked for the week so I had a choice to make. Figure out how to get her in or refer her to another therapist. Because she is a regular client and I am familiar with her case, I didn’t really want to refer her to someone else who might not be able to help her. So since she is a regular client and a stellar one at that (is always prompt, gives plenty of notice if she has to reschedule, tips, refers friends, etc.) I decided to pull her in on my day off. Twice.

Now, I don’t really enjoy working on my days off, but I do think it’s important to take care of my regular clients when they are in crisis. Would I schedule a new client on my day off? Doubtful. Would I schedule a new client with an emergency on my day off? Maybe, but then I’ve been burned with that “emergency” word before.

So what does it take to become a regular client? Not much really. I have regular clients who come once a month, once a quarter and a few who wait until they’re in pain before they schedule. The key is coming more than once.

So go find yourself a massage therapist that you like and go see them. Twice.
