2013 AMTA-AL Spring Convention – Refresh Your Career

facebook-iconMany of you may already know that I am heavily involved with AMTA-Alabama Chapter. So it won’t be any surprise when I tell you that I’m going to the spring convention next weekend.

I’m nervous about it. Not the drive or meeting new people, I’m nervous about the class I’m teaching.

I’ve hinted at it a couple of times, but here it is for all the world, I’m going to be teaching a class called “Using Facebook to Promote Your Massage Business”. It’s all about marketing yourself on Facebook by using a Facebook Page.

I shouldn’t be nervous, I’ve done the research and made some charts for folks to look at. I know what I’m going to present, but still, I’m nervous. A little of it is the whole public speaking thing, but I’m always a little nervous when I have to do that and I usually get over that part of it as soon as class starts. I think the biggest part of it is that it’s massage. And I so love massage and respect the people who teach it that I don’t want to be crappy at it.

And then there’s the whole control freak part of me that keeps repeating, “What if they don’t bring their laptops? What you going to do then?” Eeek!

Maybe I’m putting too much pressure on myself, surely someone wouldn’t sign up for a Facebook class without bringing their computer especially when the registration form says, “Bring a laptop”.

Anyway, I’m going to try to relax a little. The charts are inches away from being done. I plan on finalizing them tomorrow and getting the copies made. I wonder how many people have signed up?

Now if Facebook would just stop changing things. They would have to roll out changes as soon as I got all my graphics fixed. But I have a solution for that too, teaching moment! Plus I’m too lazy (and don’t have time) to re-do them all.

Here’s some info on the Convention if you’d like to go!

Rossiter Training

BarefootEek! How did this happen? I looked at the calendar and realized that I only have a few days left before I’ve got to pack a bag, throw my thai mat and yoga mats in the car, and head off to Atlanta for a Rossiter training.

Starting in February I somehow managed to book every weekend except this one. Between massage trainings and Mardi Gras  I’ve either spent the nights away from home or stayed out super late with friends. I’m pooped and the laundry is piling up.

Regardless, I’m very excited about this Rossiter training. It’s yet another barefoot modality, (I know you’re surprised). From what I’ve read it’s also a movement modality. Pressure and movement together sussing out what ails a muscle. Sounds good to me. I can’t wait to try it. I can’t wait to experience it.

And as a bonus it’s being hosted by AMTA-GA so I’m getting to sit in on their member meeting. Maybe I need to take a pin or something to trade. Hmm…

It’s also inexpensive. $80 for 12 CE hours and if everything goes as planned I’ll be sleeping on a friend’s couch so the cost for the whole trip should be about gas, food and time. I hope it all goes as planned.

I guess I better go call my friend and start doing some laundry.

AMTA – AL Chapter Winter Board Retreat

So many of you may know from reading here for a while that I am involved with AMTA – AL Chapter. That’s American Massage Therapy Association – Alabama Chapter for the acronym sticklers among us. It’s quite a mouthful to say and a handful to type so I avoid it whenever possible.

Anyway, I’m in with AMTA – AL Chapter. For the non-massage therapist readers out there, AMTA is an association massage therapists can join. Most do so to gain the (usually) required insurance coverage to practice, but AMTA also comes with a whole host of perks and benefits which I will let you go check out on your own if you are interested.

I donate a fair amount of time to AMTA-AL serving as their current Website/Social Media Committee Co-Chairperson. That’s a fancy title for computer monkey and apparently as such I needed to show up at the Winter Board Retreat. Who knew?

The retreat was held at a largish house on Smith Lake in beautiful Crane Hill, AL. It slept only 23 people. Geesh… you’d think for 8 they could have gotten more room 😉 jk. It actually was quite comfortable for the 8 who showed to stay and the others who came later just for meetings.

One might assume a houseful of massage therapists would be enjoying a weekend of fun and relaxation with a lot of massage happening. But not so much. We spent the weekend meeting and planning and meeting and planning and meeting and planning some more. What’s so all-fired important? Well, we have an Annual Convention coming up and it’s going to be at the beach*!!! Woo hoo!!!

All the meeting and planning was to make sure everything is getting done and to figure out more fun things to offer MTs who show up for ‘up to 20 very affordable CE hours’ (you must read that last phrase in your best game show host voice). I think we’re all glad the sitting part is over. There was a lot of it, but we are all super-excited about the Annual Convention. I love being involved in an organization that works hard to bring CE opportunities to MTs. And it was a great opportunity to get to know the people I’m working with better. Who knew I would be rubbing elbows with MTs from the other end of the state? I would have never met most of the people I spent the weekend with if not for AMTA-AL. I love it and if it sounds interesting to you, let me know and I’ll hook you up.

Anyway, it was real and it was fun and parts of it were real fun, but my butt is still a little numb. I look forward to seeing you at the Annual Conference!

*What? You want to know more about the beach? Well, click here for now and come back in a few days. I’ll be posting a lot more information here for the Refresh Your Career weekend at Orange Beach, AL with AMTA-AL Chapter.

Taking On More

Recently I wrote about how busy November was going to be for me. Between several massage CEU opportunities, teaching an engineering class at UAH and Thanksgiving, I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed. This, I suppose, is why while at the AMTA-AL Chapter Fall Meeting I accepted the position as Website/Social Media Committee Chair. Obviously, I’m being facetious. The point being we all take on more than we can chew sometimes.

For a year I have served on this committee as a Social Media Liaison. Essentially that means that I have managed (played on) our AMTA-AL Chapter Facebook page. I think I’ve bitten off quite a chunk in agreeing to take over management of the website and bulk email program. It’s okay though, I love to learn new things and it’s a challenge.

For now I’m trying to integrate these new responsibilities in to the existing rhythm of my days. I can’t yet tell how it’s going. I may need to make a list. If you find that it becomes quiet here you’ll know that I’m busy trying to get and keep all the plates spinning. It won’t take long.

Educational Overload

"Harvest Moon Massage Therapy"Earlier this year a friend said to me, “I haven’t heard you talking about any new classes lately. What’s up with that?” To which I responded that I just hadn’t seen anything I wanted to take. Apparently I should have taken that question as an indicator that I needed to start saving up a lot of money. My educational plan for this year was to go very light on the CEUs because I spent more than I had planned on the Bamboo-Fusion class back in March.

But then the part of me that is a junkie for learning new things bit hard and  I now have more CEUs scheduled between now and January than you can shake a monkey at.

I was trying to be fiscally responsible when I signed up for three, 2-hour educational opportunities at a local Pilates studio. They were relatively inexpensive and local (score!) The first of those three start the end of October with the first installment of a two-part Hamstring class.

Then, and I don’t even remember how it happened, I found a 5-day Thai Yoga Massage class happening in Hohenwald, TN at Gray Bear Lodge. The time frame worked. It was within driving distance and lodging and food was included in the cost. But oh, the cost… I agonized over whether I should do it or not. After consulting with said friend from above, I finally decided that the opportunity probably would not present itself again and that I should just tap the savings account to do it so I signed up.

Then the announcement for the AMTA-Alabama Chapter Fall Meeting and CEU came out. Originally the CEU was for Cold Stone and Migraine Therapy. I was seriously on the fence about that and when I made the decision to do the Gray Bear Lodge/Thai Yoga Massage class I decided not to do the Cold Stone. Then the Cold Stone fell through and they announced Hal Richardson would be doing 3-D Manual Therapy for Legs, Ankles, and Feet and well, I just couldn’t resist. Being a member, I get the discounted rate for 6 hours of CEUs and who could turn that down. And since there’s only three days between the Hamstring I class and the 3-D Manual Therapy class I should get even more bang for my buck in the retention and integration department.

I called it done. No more CEUs this year. This is it. Yeah, right… then I read on Facebook that an Ashi-acquaintance had taken the Fijian Barefoot class and I just sort of melted. I emailed her and she asked if I’d like to come take the Fijian Barefoot with Oil class in New Orleans. I said I’d think about it because, again, I was trying hard to be fiscally responsible while at the same time trying to figure out if skipping this opportunity would mean that to get it I would have to travel to Illinois at a later date.

Then I got to wondering about the schedule for Fijian in general, hit the website and SHAZAM! Lolita Knight is teaching Fijian Island Barefoot Massage and  Soft Touch Island Massage in Nashville in the middle of November. Actually she is teaching about 4-days worth of all kinds of interesting things that I would love to take, but, alas, money.

I’ve been wanting to take the Fijian class for a couple of years. Once I finally felt like I was proficient in Ashi I started craving knowledge for different barefoot systems and this one seems to be a pretty well-developed course. Anyway, Lolita Knight developed the Fijian massage for the U.S. and she is planning on retiring next year. Who knows when I’d have the opportunity to take it this close to home and from the creator, herself. So I signed up. Sigh…

So, here’s how the next couple of months are going to shake out CEU-wise for me:

October 29 – Hamstring I

November 2 – 3 – AMTA – AL Fall Massage Mingle, Meeting & 3-D Manual Therapy: Legs, Ankles and Feet

November 16 – Fijian Island Barefoot Massage & Soft Touch Island Massage

November 28 – December 2 – Thai Yoga Massage

December 3 – Hamstring II

January 7 – Lordosis/Kyphosis Class

I’m tired just looking at this list, but on the upside I won’t need anymore CEUs for a long, long time and I won’t be able to afford them either.
